At 30 years old, Israafil has built Cassia Studio into one of Singapore's growing interior design firms, completing more than 300 renovation projects since launching the company in 2022. But behind the business lies a story of resilience, family sacrifice, and a commitment to raising standards within the renovation industry. For Israafil, entrepreneurship was never simply about building a company. It was about honouring the journey that brought him there.
Long before he entered the interior design industry, Israafil was introduced to construction work through his father.Growing up, he and his siblings were regularly taught practical skills such as welding, painting, electrical works, and basic construction techniques. At the time, he did not always appreciate the lessons.Like many young people, he often wondered why he needed to spend his weekends learning manual trades while his friends were doing other things.Looking back today, he credits those experiences for providing the foundation that would eventually shape his career. Those early lessons taught him not only technical skills but also discipline, problem solving, and the value of hard work.
One of the most defining moments of Israafil's childhood came when his father's business collapsed. At the time, the family was living in a landed property. Following the bankruptcy, everything changed. The family of ten moved into their aunt's home before eventually relocating to a small HDB rental flat in Cassia Crescent. While the experience was difficult, it left a lasting impression on Israafil.Rather than viewing those years with embarrassment, he sees them as an important chapter of his family's story. The struggles, sacrifices, and lessons learned during that period continue to motivate him today. When it came time to name his company, the decision was an easy one.Cassia Studio was named after Cassia Crescent as a tribute to the place that reminded him where he came from and how far his family had travelled.
Following his father's advice, Israafil pursued architecture at ITE.His studies opened doors to opportunities within the built environment industry, including internships with RSP Architects. He later joined SAA Architects as a drafter, contributing to major MRT projects across Singapore.Although the work was stable and professionally rewarding, he soon realised that life behind a desk was not where he wanted to spend his future.Seeking something more dynamic, he entered the renovation industry. The transition was not easy.Sales did not come naturally in the beginning, and building confidence with clients took time. However, through persistence and continuous learning, Israafil gradually developed his skills and eventually became one of the top performers within his company. The experience gave him both the technical knowledge and commercial understanding needed to eventually start his own business.
In 2022, at the age of 27, Israafil decided to take the leap into entrepreneurship.Unlike many startups that rely on investors or loans, he funded Cassia Studio entirely through personal savings. The business launched without a portfolio, established reputation, or large marketing budget.Instead, growth came through a simple formula: delivering quality work and exceeding client expectations.Satisfied customers began referring friends and family, creating a steady stream of projects through word of mouth. What started as a small operation quickly gained momentum.Today, Cassia Studio has completed more than 300 renovation projects and operates from a showroom that reflects the premium standards the company strives to uphold.
Despite the company's success, the journey has not been without setbacks. One of the most serious incidents occurred when a former employee allegedly impersonated the company and scammed a client of approximately $96,000.The matter resulted in a police investigation and created significant challenges for the business. For Israafil, the incident reinforced the importance of trust and accountability.Since then, the company has implemented stricter hiring practices and places greater emphasis on recruiting individuals with genuine industry experience and professional backgrounds. While the experience was difficult, it ultimately strengthened the company's internal processes and standards.
One of Israafil's defining qualities as a founder is his willingness to challenge conventional thinking. When third party defect inspection services first became popular in Singapore, many renovation companies viewed them as a threat.Initially, Israafil shared similar concerns. However, after considering the issue from a homeowner's perspective, he changed his view completely. He realised that defect inspections ultimately protect clients and encourage higher workmanship standards across the industry.Rather than resisting the trend, Cassia Studio embraced it.Today, the company engages independent defect inspectors both before and after renovation works. This process creates greater transparency, accountability, and confidence for homeowners. For Israafil, improving industry standards is not just good business. It is the right thing to do.
Beyond renovations, Israafil believes businesses should play a meaningful role in supporting communities.Cassia Studio currently conducts monthly charitable initiatives that provide food and water aid to communities in Gaza. The company also supports independent rescuers who care for stray cats, particularly those operating in Johor Bahru. These efforts are funded as part of the company's commitment to giving back.Looking ahead, Israafil hopes to involve clients in future charitable initiatives and expand the impact that the business can make beyond renovation projects.
While Cassia Studio has already achieved significant growth, Israafil believes the company's greatest opportunities still lie ahead. In addition to expanding the business, he hopes to mentor future generations of interior designers and help young graduates navigate the industry more effectively. His long term vision extends beyond building a successful company. He wants to contribute to a more professional, transparent, and trusted interior design industry where homeowners can make decisions with greater confidence.
From learning construction skills as a child to overcoming financial hardship and launching a company from personal savings, Israafil's journey reflects the power of perseverance and purpose. What began in a small rental flat in Cassia Crescent has grown into a business that has transformed hundreds of homes across Singapore. For Israafil, however, success is measured by more than completed projects. It is about creating opportunities, raising standards, and ensuring that the lessons learned from the past continue to shape a better future.
